In the firing process, the kiln is fired (heated) up to 1800 degrees when the glowing hot pieces are promptly removed. They are then placed in a metal trash can containing shredded paper, sawdust or other combustible material. Once the paper is burning a lid is placed on the can to smother the flame and starve the glazes of oxygen. This causes the glazes to turn from greens to blues, oranges, yellows, reds, and coppers. These pieces will not hold water but can be scaled with water sealer or wax. A glass or plastic vase can be placed inside the rake vase to hold the water for flowers.
